Sexually transmitted diseases or STDs are diseases which are spread through a sexual intercourse. These diseases are spread through vaginal, anal or oral sex. One should be very careful while having sex and condoms should always be used in order to stay safe. One should limit the number of sex partners he or she has, and should get oneself tested for STDs so that it does not spread to the others. Here are the ten diseases that can be transmitted from one person to the other by having sex with each other.

HIV or AIDS

“Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a set of infections which result from the damage to the human immune system which is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)”

It is transmitted through oral, vaginal or anal sex. Besides sex it can also be transmitted through contaminated hypodermic needles, from a pregnant mother to the baby during child birth or pregnancy, breast feeding or any other exposure to the infected bodily fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, preseminal fluid, and breast milk.

HIV does not let your body resist certain types of cancers and infections which your body would have normally resisted.

Hepatitis

Hepatitis is caused by a virus. The viruses are categorized from A to G. The common thing between them is that they all affect the liver. It can occur if alcohol is consumed in excess or by the use of certain medicines and drugs. Hepatitis A, B, and C are the most common. One of the common symptoms is the change of color of eyes and skin from normal to yellow. Hepatitis B is estimated to be 50 to 100 times more infectious than HIV and it is most frequently passed on through sexual intercourse or the exchange of bodily fluids with an infected person.

Hepatitis C is mostly transmitted through blood, like in blood transfusions or having unprotected sex with more than one sex partner. Like other Hepatitis viruses, it also causes inflammation of the liver. Initially the symptoms do not occur. They may occur later on after 15 to 150 days.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is one of the fastest and most common diseases being transmitted sexually. It is caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium. It is transmitted by having a sexual intercourse with someone already infected by this disease or also by genital contact with the infected person.

Pregnant women with Chlamydia can pass on this disease to the newborn infant during delivery. It infects the urethra, rectum and eyes in both men and women, and the cervix in women. It can cause fertility problems in women, in the long run.

Crabs or Pubic Lice

Crabs are small crab-shaped parasites that dig into the skin to feed on blood. They are found on coarse body hair, like pubic hair, facial hair, armpit hair, and even on the eyelashes. Crabs are easily transfer during sex, and can also be transferred through sharing stuff like towels, clothes or bedding with someone who has crabs. However crabs cannot be transmitted through swimming pools or toilet seats.

Chancroid

It is a bacterial disease that can spread through sexual contact only. It causes the genitals to sore painfully. This disease is mostly in the third world countries, very few of the cases of this disease are seen in the United states. It causes a small bump in the genitals. Then the bump becomes an ulcer after or within a day. Men who are not circumcised are at much higher risk than men who are circumcised for getting chancroid from any infected person. This disease (Chancroid) is also a risk factor for the HIV virus

Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial infection which caused by Treponema pallidium, earlier it was known as the pox. This disease is usually sexually transmitted, but it can also be passed on from an infected pregnant woman to her unborn child. Syphilis has several stages, among which the primary and secondary stages are very infectious.

Scabies

It is the skin infestation of the parasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei. The adult female mite is about 0.4 mm long and is barely visible to the human eye, and the male being half that size. Female mites burrow into the outer layer of the skin (stratum croneum) so that they can lay eggs. It causes intense itchy rash of inflamed pimple-like lumps. It is not necessary that scabies would only be transmitted through sexual intercourse, however there are high chances of getting scabies from an infected partner during an intercourse.

Genital warts

These are caused by sub-types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV). They can occur on the skin anywhere in the genital area and can be as small whitish or flesh-coloured bumps, or as large as , fleshy, cauliflower-like lumps. They usually don’t cause any pain but they may itch and might be difficult to spot. If a woman has a wart on her cervix then she may experience some bleeding or an unusual colored vaginal discharge.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis or Trich is caused by a single-celled organism called Trichomonas vaginalis, and it is transmitted through sex. Vagina and the male and female urethra can be affected. This disease often presents no symptoms, however women are more likely to experience some symptoms than men. The symptoms are of getting a discharge in both males and females (sometimes copious and unpleasant smelling in females). And other symptoms like having pain while sexual intercourse or urination.

Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which is a bacteria that grows and also multiplies quickly in moist and warm areas of the body like the urethra, cervix, mouth, or rectum. In case of females, the cervix is mostly infected. However, it can also spread to the uterus (womb) and fallopian tubes, and can cause pelvic inflammatory disease that can lead to infertility. Gonorrhoea spreads most commonly during genital contact, but it can also happen like it passes from the genitals of a partner to the throat of the other partner while having the oral sex. Gonorrhoea of the rectum can appear in people who have anal sex. In case of the pregnant women, gonorrhoea can be transferred from an infected woman to her newborn infant during the delivery. Just like most of the other diseases also transfer during the delivery.
